When California State Highway Patrol Officer Shannon Distel was killed in an automobile accident in August, it was his friends and family here in his hometown who raised money to help his wife and children.

A benefit held at the Fostoria American Legion Post November 14 was attended by nearly 300 people and raised $7,459 to assist Shannon's wife, Deanna, and their four children.

The Distels had just purchased a new home and while Deanna will receive a death benefit, that money will not be paid for two to four months.

The benefit featured a spaghetti/hog roast dinner, lots of raffles and music by Impressions By George.

Over two dozen local businesses contributed many raffle items including two rifles, a golf bag, fishing trip, DVD players, two golf outings for four, an inflatable Ohio State Buckeye chair, an OSU jacket, Longaberger pie plate, women's beauty and hair care supplies and a glass chess and checker set.

The benefit was organized by Scott Hofacker of the Ohio Police Benevolent Association, Chuck Parsons of Local 811, Jason Root of International Fire Fighters Association Local 325, and Art Allison and Arnie Sayre of Fostoria's veterans organizations. Their goal was to raise $5,000.

Shannon's parents, Mark and Cindy Distel, as well as other members of the family, attended the benefit.

When the money was counted on Sunday November 16, Cindy told the organizers, "You did such a nice job. This is just wonderful."

The Distels and the organizers wanted to thank everyone who helped including Carol Shontz, Buzz Hollinger, Denny Shiley, Butch Bulkowski, Nancy Stiger, Nancy Allison, Eric Kramer, Jane Sayre, Robin and Fran Wagner, Nancy Distel, Pat and Lorie Brooks, Carolyn Keegan, Jeff Distel, Martha Nye, Charlotte Goshe, Tim Kessler, Jim Haferd, Tim and Jamie Hatfield and Michelle Hofacker.

The Focus extends its condolences and best wishes to the Distel family.
