Renovation Just the Latest of the AMVETS' Doings
January 2, 2000, article two

Not long ago I ran into Rich Waldron at the American Legion. Rich is the commander of Fostoria's AMVETS Post 69.

He invited me to stop by the Post on East. Tiffin Street to have a look at some improvements they're making to their building. Big improvements, too.

They include a 1,300 square foot addition to be used for meetings and dancing; a storage room, new lighting, new carpet, a horseshoe bar and a handicapped accessible restroom.

It will be real nice when the work is done.

We also got to talking about some of the community activities and events the AMVETS support in and around Fostoria. I jotted some of them down and that's an interesting list, too.

It includes the St. Wendelin and Fostoria High School after prom parties, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the pool at Water Park, Camp Fire Boys and Girls, the Ritz Theatre and the BOC employees Christmas party.

The AMVETS also support area veterans' programs including Fostoria's Vietnam Veterans Post 440, Hancock County Veterans Memorial, the Fountain Cemetery doughboy restoration, Lima Area POW/MIA and the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.

In fact, they recently underwrote the entire cost of a new whirlpool for the OVH.

Other Post contributions have benefitted the First Step Domestic Violence Center, Seneca County Commission on Aging, Fire Safety House, Fostoria Junior Baseball, Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria Community Hospital Positive Lifestyles Department, Boy Scouts, St. Francis Rehabilitation Center in Green Springs and the Glass Heritage Festival.

They also have regularly supported WFOB's annual fireworks extravaganza and last year purchased a pitching machine for the Fostoria Junior Girls Softball.

The membership of Post 69, including the Women's Auxiliary and the Sons of the AMVETS, numbers approximately 400.

The AMVETS Post 69 is one of those organizations you don't hear a lot about, but they've been here in Fostoria since 1991.

Since then they've been quietly doing their part to support many of the good things about Fostoria.

The Focus just thought they deserved a mention.
