| Membership in the band includes a wide range of
ages, from high school students through senior citizens. Skill levels range
from moderate to advanced. There are no auditions for membership in the
band and placement in a section is determined by the section leader. Musicians
in all sections are needed and encouraged to join. On occasion, a specific
section will be highlighted by participating in an ensemble at one of our
concerts. Practices are held most Thursday evenings between late September and June. No practices are held during the months of July or August. The band practices from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Fostoria Middle School band room. Both the band and the musician benefit from regular attendance at these practices. An executive board, elected by the membership, governs the activities of the band. The board meets monthly to plan events, vote on purchasing new music, and discuss concerns of the membership. Minutes are available for reading by the members and all members are welcome to attend these meetings. Music played by the group ranges widely, including marches, movie tunes, music from Broadway, seasonal music, hymns and music from current trends. Suggestions by the membership for musical selections are always welcome. The band has accumulated a moderately extensive stockpile of music and budgets for new selections every year. The band tries to master one project piece (difficult selection) for each concert. The band enjoys at least one social gathering each year. According to the current by-laws, an annual meeting must be held to elect members to the executive board, and this occurs each year in September. A newsletter is published monthly covering current happenings in the band and upcoming events. Members of the band are spotlighted in each publication of the newsletter. A copy of this newsletter is available at this site. |
