A downtown fire very
nearly completed the destruction of the entire block on the East side of
Main Street between Center and Tiffin streets. The other half of this block
(occupied by the Alcott Building et al) was destroyed by fire in 1962. That
site was converted to an asphalt paved parking lot.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time (Monday, March 3, 2008, nor is it known exactly where it started. The fire also damaged or destroyed an adjacent building that faced onto Tiffin St. The corner building (the Preis store many years ago) was completely destroyed. It is not known at this time whether the remaining buildings will be torn down or rebuilt. It would appear from a casual inspection of the site that none of the remaining buildings can be salvaged. However modern building techniques can sometimes yield results which surprise even the experts. In any event it will probably be several months or more before their fate is determined. The top picture is taken from Tiffin St. looking West. The middle picture is also from Tiffin St. facing North and showing the damage to an adjacent building. The bottom picture shows the front of the block from Main St. facing Northeast. By the staff of Fostoria.Org |
